The Earls of Essex, their wives and children

Portrait of Arthur Capel, 1st Earl of Essex

Arthur Capel, 1st Earl of Essex (1631-1683)

Circle of Sir Peter Lely

This portrait commemorates Arthur's appointment as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. While he was in Ireland, his family moved to Cassiobury House, but his opportunity to enjoy the splendours of his new estate was short-lived. He was arrested in 1683, taken to the Tower and charged with high treason for his part in the Rye House plot. On 13 July 1683, Arthur was found in his rooms with his throat cut.
